Ambient Experiments

Ambient music is nothing new. Minimalist composers such as Steve Reich, Terry Riley and Philip Glass have expounded the concepts of minimalism for some time and Ambient Music is just another facet of that. I was introduced to the concept by Brian Eno, whose early work, Discrete Music, explored, somewhat accidentally, the concept of music as environment creating an ambience, like sophisticated muzak. Over the years, the concept of Ambient Music (excluding whale noises and such) has evolved into an interesting exponent of experimental, free-form music with limited or even non-existent traditional musical structure. I have tried to develop these concepts and devices to create music that can be listened to, ignored, or just left to create a background.

I call these experiments because they arrive mostly by experimenting with ideas, throwing sounds together and seeing what emerges. Beginning with sounds and concepts that I find interesting and collecting them to formulate compatible themes, approximating a mix and structure, I then play with the outcome to fine tune the result and to produce something listenable.

Designed very specifically for a surround format, I believe the spatial reference adds an important dimension to the music, something this approach to Ambient Music can utilise most successfully.

Sometimes these experiments work better than at other times. Perhaps you will be able to tell. Sometimes I surprise myself. I hope you find them interesting and engaging.
